Roccalbegna

You are searching for a place to be lost in thought .....

Roccalbegna is situated in the upper valley of the river Albegna on the southern slope of Monte Labbro.

The village was built in the 13th century by the republic of Siena, and extends from the fortifications of the castle, dating back to the period of the Aldobrandeschi counts and later, the republic of Siena, to the rock which dominates the village.

The castle, more or less intact to this day, guarded the place in the past and offered protection in case the village itself had to capitulate.

From the point of the "Sasso," near the fortification, you will enjoy a wonderful panorama over the entire Albegna valley.

In the past the community was very isolated having few connecting roads, so its economy was confined to traditional cultivation of cereals, and the production of wine and olive oil.

Even today the agriculture is the focus of life here, the growing of fodder, the production of olive oil and the keeping of sheep being very important.

The visitors to this small village discover the attraction of the countryside where the days stand still as if by magic.

You can discover the open country by riding or walking in the area of the crystal-clear water of the river Fiora.
